Type approved towbars

Motorhomes registered post April 2012 are required to have a 'Type Approved' tow bar. Failure to adhere to this (and we have ourselves caught several dealers and fitters 'passing off' their own fabrications as type approved and charging accordingly)! Can have serious implications.

1. It could and should fail the MOT Test
2. If stopped (e.g. by VOSA spot check) you will probably not be allowed to tow any further, even to get your trailer/towed car home!
3. In the event of an accident, your insurance company would be within its rights to refuse a payout!

So its worth sticking to the rules!!!

You should look for the sticker shown here (the tow bar manufacturers name will vary, naturally)

TOWBARS -
Two basic types:
  • panel van conversions
  • Coachbuilts

Panel van conversions:
Panel van conversions can usually use the tow bar made for the commercial vehicle and are therefore much cheaper and generally quicker to fit than coachbuilts – though electrics can be a fiddle.
Coachbuilt:
Coachbuilts are more complicated – read on –
Unfortunately life's never simple, so before fitting we have to consider the chassis type I.e. does it extend to the rear of the motorhome, it is strong enough to carry the loads or does it need chassis extensions (which also must be 'Type Approved')
